Joan, with all due respect, that is NOT the way I would work with EmoTrance.

You go down that path and you go into "psychology" territory and then
it's not EmoTrance anymore.

My classic case in point is that person who had some thing stuck in her
back and wailed, "But it only wants to protect me ..."

... thus inviting a five mile hike around the block with all sorts of
secondary gain and primary gain and possibly even a discussion of a past
life as a caged hamster!

It's a normal response of people to want to do that whole thing, after a
few years in psychology and self help it becomes "the thing to do" but
it isn't EmoTrance.

The correct response to the "But it only wants to protect me!" wail is
to hold your ground and to say, "It's only an energy. It doesn't WANT
anything at all, other than to flow, as energy is designed to do."

The other point is the watermelon reference.

You got to remember, we are NOT doing focussing here, and we are NOT
doing metaphor work.

There is NO watermelon.

There is ONLY an energy form that isn't moving as it should and thus
producing sensations of pressure and possibly pain.

EmoTrance is a HIGHLY structural, and deliberately abstracted form of
working with energy.

The ONLY metaphor that is allowed is that of water in its various states
  and that's it.

Focussing is a fine therapy form, and if the client likes it, and it is
appropriate, why not?

But it's really essential to then not call it EmoTrance, and to keep
that quite clear.

In EmoTrance, if the client feels a resistance to setting the flow
process in motion, there's two things you do.

No. 1 - and that IS the No. 1, if not THE ONLY REASON, ever! - is to
trace the channels BELOW or ABOVE or around the pressure feeling.

People WILL NOT initiate a flow into these ereas if they know from past
experience that it will be painful.

That's where the blockages come from, they are in essence tourniques to
stop pain and further injury to an already injured erea which needs
healing BEFORE the blockage can be dissolved.

(As an aside, this is what can cause massive abreactions in EFT, for
example - the blockage goes, the energy hits the injured erea, and a
total freakout ensues as "the abuse memories come back" or people
re-experience traumatic flashbacks. This is ENTIRELY avoided in the
structure of ET).

Should a client really be very frightened or terrified of even
approaching something, and this can be the case easily enough if the
original causative events were particularly horrific, and that's then
exacerbated if they've either had flashbacks since, or they've been in
those forms of therapy where this stuff is being stirred up repeatedly
in the hope they'll get tired of suffering eventually), then we are in a
position to have to treat the "fear of the fear" upfront, which is a
secondary location to the actual main target of the session.

Which is why I also advise with "heavy stuff" to do EmoTrance on
something else first, on something that is:

1. Readily available to current adult memory;
2. Noticeable and disturbing but completely consciously processed;
3. Laid down within no more than five to ten years ago.

Once a person has experience of the truly unique way in which EmoTrance
works, they will be a lot less afraid when it comes to approaching the
"heavy old stuff" and by definition, what resistance is then happening
is much more likely to be simply structural.

I'd like to close this with saying that of course in a live session with
a live client, one can do all sorts of things that seem appropriate -
switch between ET and EFT, bring in some focussing or gestalt work, a
bit of hypnosis and NLP, whatever it takes to get the job done.

It is my job on this list to keep it clear and clean however, what
EmoTrance is and how it works, especially as there are beginners
listening in, so let's be pure and careful here and remember that

IT IS ONLY AN ENERGY
