Shields

Hi All
I've been thinking about the shields thing for abit now--- and this question will not let go of me.
Is it possible to have shields not of your own making/
As in " I was the buffer between your father and you children, I shielded you from him"
And yrs later--- the grown child says-" I feel like i am in a cage and I cannot get out"
