The teacher trauma that most stays with me was not actually mine. It was
watching a ten year old girl in my class stand up to read her essay out loud (by
command of teacher). She didn't get any further than the first line when
the teacher interrupted her, shouting and belittling her in front of the class
for her ignorance and stupidity. The first line of the story? "One night
as I lay day-dreaming in bed ....." As I recall, the point the teacher wanted
to make was only stupid people thought they could day dream at night. The
fact that I remember it all so vividly some 50 years later, including the look
on the child's face, I suppose says it impacted me too. I have often
wondered if she ever had the courage to write another story. Shahzadi
