<<Somehow, focussing on the idea of energy brings the thoughts nicely under control (for me) and creates a stabilisation effect. When I go with the thoughts, I can get into veritable whirlpools of madness, get quite out of control.

Here's an additional thought:
The cognitive folks (as well as the "you create your own reality" folks and "running your own brain" affectionados - which makes me want to run* away from their* brains!) have pointed out the power of beliefs in shaping perception.
And yet, what is ignored is that it is extremely rapidly activated (and pre-consciously processed) emotion that triggers beliefs and potentiates these.
A belief that doesn't have an emotional charge associated with it, has no impact whatsoever.
Which is why focusing on energy and emotion is so much more relevant than focusing on cognition, IMO.
