But seriously, I sometimes wonder if "they" could make it sound
any worse if they tried.

Here's a few "enlightenment ads" that come to mind:

Chop wood = NOTHING WHATSOEVER changes. Don't bother. Waste of
time. You'll just be disappointed after all that hardship when you
get there ... again ...

INSANITY...????

NOTHING!!!

flagellate yourself ENDLESSLY in a barren cell for the rest of
your sexless, joyless life!
