For people to say "ET is a bit like ..." is a reasonable impulse:
grasping, apprehending something new through something already known. At
least it shows they're thinking! Don't we do this all the time, and rightly
so, approaching the new with reference to the already-understood..

The problem arises when someone says "It's ** exactly ** like ..." or
"It's ** the same as ** ..." or it's ** just like **...", suggesting that
they think there's nothing new there, and they can afford to ignore it
("Phew ... that'll save a bit of time and effort"). I'm reminded of the
myth of the bed of Procrustes - remember him - his guests were stretched to
fit his bed if they were too short, or the extra length was lopped off if
the guest was too tall. [It'd be nice to report that he found his soulmate
in someone that fitted the bed perfectly, but I believe that such persons
were both stretched and lopped...]. The most interesting bits are the bits
that get lopped off when you force the new into the template of the
already-known, the bits that you ** haven't ** found in kinesiology or
whatever. The differences that make the difference re ET...

When I do talks&Demos on ET now, and someone says "Isn't this rather
like xxx?" I've taken to saying something like
"Well, yes perhaps it has something in common with xxx, but what it's
[theatrical exaggeration] ** MOST ** like is ... [theatrical pause] **
ITSELF **". And that seems to make the point.

btw someone once said he thought that ET was a bit like a 6-step
reframe" [!!!], but I didn't unpack why he thought that...
